There are many services available in your community that can help you deal with a bullying problem. Here is a list of community support agencies, and a list of programmes and resources for teachers, parents and caregivers (below).

Community Support Agencies

There are counselling and support agencies in your area who may be able to give you additional advice or information to help solve bullying problems.

Programmes and resources for schools and care-givers

A range of programmes are available for schools and care-givers through government and private agencies.

Police Youth programmes include:

  • Kia Kaha (Stand Strong) - taught by police education officers, in partnership with teachers, to students in Years 1-6. Contact your police station for details.

  • Keeping Ourselves Safe - a police programme for primary and secondary schools, introduced by your local police education officer. Contact your police station for details.

  • D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) - a programme of resources for young people. Contact your school, to request a police education officer to teach this programme.


Other programmes and information:

  • Conflict Partnership Service: Trained facilitators offer their skills to work through the problems of anyone needing help. They can help fights at school, student/teacher conflict, relationship problems, suspensions and other school hassles. Call Jane or Robin (04)801-7066 to confidentially discuss your case, possible costs and to put you in touch someone in your area.

    Training: Conflict Partnership Training is available in April 1998 in Wellington and Christchurch. Call Jane or Robin above.

  • Parent Education Programmes: Contact local Citizens Advice Bureaux for advice on appropriate programmes, such as Positive Parenting, for caregivers.

  • Eliminating Violence - Managing Anger - a Specialist Education Services programme funded by the Ministry of Education for schools across New Zealand. The programme uses a whole school approach to develop effective non-violent strategies for teachers, students and the surrounding community. Contact your local SES Area Manager for details or contact the EV Team on (09) 279-6600.

  • The Whole School Approach - a strategy process for schools, which involves raising awareness, implementing curriculum initiatives, developing student skills and implementing intervention strategies. Contact the Ministry of Education for further details.

  • Cool Schools - Peer Mediation in Primary and Secondary Schools. Aotearoa/New Zealand Foundation for Peace Studies. Contact: Yvonne Duncan Ph (09) 373 2379.

  • Students Rights at Schools - an information kit available from the Office of the Commissioner for Children.

  • Building Blocks - a pre-school programme being trialled in Kohanga Reo and Pacific Islands language nests - contact the Ministry of Education for details.

  • Tu Tangata programme - a community programme working with schools in Wainuiomata (Wellington area) - contact the Ministry of Education for details.

  • GAIN NZ runs three established free programmes for 12 to 17 year olds and their caregivers: GAIN Family, an early intervention programme, GAIN FACTOR, a programme for young people who have a serious drug and or alcohol problem, and GAIN Over Anger, for young people who have serious problems with his or her anger (not for victims of violence). The programmes are activity-based and run over a five-week period for two hours a week. They cover topics such as communication, rules and consequences, anger awareness and management, problem solving, peer pressure, how to say no, self esteem, drugs and alcohol information.

  • Contact your nearest Rotary organisation to see what youth orientated programmes they are running.

  • Reaching Out, and Reaching Forward: social skills programmes for primary school pupils.

  • School counsellors - most secondary schools have trained counsellors available to help.

  • Visiting teachers - trained counsellors who work in primary schools - contact the Ministry of Education for details.

  • Eliminating Violence - a series of books for children, from Wendy Pye publishers. Ask at your local book-store.

  • Healthy Schools - a document available from your School Trustees Association.

  • The Safe Schools Newsletter - a newsletter available from your School Trustees Association.
